Homemade yogurt – nobody sick yet

Yes, those are Gerber bottlesWith some extra time on my hands this weekend I made my own yogurt from this recipe. It sounds intimidating, but is was a snap. I considered buying a fancy-pants commercial/electric maker, but then I thought “what did people do a hundred years ago” and decided I would give the low-tech way a try. A 1/2 gallon of local Northwest milk (purchased at Ralph’s Thriftway), a couple of tablespoons of plain yogurt I already had and 6 hours later we had delicious yogurt. No sugar, preservatives, etc. etc. I was afraid that the cooler it was fermenting in would get too cold, but it wasn’t a problem. I mixed up a batch, headed to the Skyline drive-in in Shelton to watch Kung Fu Panda with the family and when I got back it was ready.

Now I am thinking about all the other things I can make with it- in baking, raita, mixing it with the fresh raspberries from our CSA or blueberries from our bushes out back. I many never buy yogurt from a store again.
